6. Use less heated water. One of the easiest ways of doing this is to take showers and not baths, however, using Power Showers and spending too long in the shower can have just as bad an effect as a bath. A normal shower is just fine. In Antarctica, a shower longer than two minutes is known as a 'Hollywood Shower'- extravagant and unnecessary. Also, spend a little extra money on a more efficient washing machine so you can save lots more in the future.
7. Drink tap water. Our tap water is clean and safe to drink, however, lots of people are going out to the shops and buying a bottle instead of just getting it from the tap. If you use tap water, you will help to prevent the large amounts of fossil fuels burnt from transporting the bottles abroad, millions of tonnes of water unnecessarily transported over millions of miles and you will also help avoid the billions of plastic bottles needed. If you want to be sure your tap water is clean, buy a filter jug or a water filter. And it's much cheaper.
8. Don't use ready made meals! Lots of people have ready made meals as they cannot be bothered or don't have the time to make their own food. Here are some reasons why not to use ready made meals: Lots of packaging used, often cooked twice, using up unnecessary energy, they may contain additives and frozen meals use extra energy to keep them frozen. Ready made meals do not taste as good anyway.
9. Recycle. It is constantly becoming easier and more popular to recycle than to throw stuff into landfill. Aluminium cans, glass bottles and newspapers are all made of materials you should definitely be recycling. If you have unwanted clothing or appliances that are in good condition, why not donate them to your local charity shops or sell them on eBay? All this prevents lots of CO2 getting into the atmosphere as much less energy is used and also prevents mining which is needed to get the space for landfill sites.
10. Get energy efficient light bulbs. Everyone is aware of these. They use a fraction of the energy of an ordinary light bulb and have come down in price over the recent years and so they are much cheaper than an ordinary light bulb. This prevents lots and lots of CO2 getting in the atmosphere. Also they last far longer than an ordinary light bulb.
